I have been asked so many times to explain to friends why my daughter chooses to play the role of victim, survivor, heroine. She was never a victim, but chose and still chooses to victimize members of her own family. She is a survivor. I am a survivor. We are all survivors. Heroine? I suppose that if we all indulged our fantasies we could actually believe our own spin. A wise doctor once told me “People tell themselves little stories so that they can live with themselves.” And that is my answer.
FINDING ONE’S VOICE IS CONSIDERED A MILESTONE IN PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND A REASON TO REJOICE FOR ANYONE WHO SPEAKS AT LAST THEIR TRUTH.
CONSIDER A FAMILY MEMBER WHO DECIDES TO TAKE THE VOICE ON THE ROAD AND SHARE WITH THE PUBLIC HER VERSION OF THE TRUTH. IN A THINLY VEILED MEMOIR WHICH CHRONICLES THE DYSFUNCTION OF THE O’MALLEY FAMILY, THE AUTHOR’S ACTUAL FAMILY IS DEMONIZED, DIAGNOSED AND HELD UP TO RIDICULE. I CALL THIS BOOK “THE VOICE OF THE TOXIC CHILD”.
The fictional saga of the O’Malley family was the weapon of choice for my adult daughter’s revenge for her revisionist version of her childhood.
She chose the ideal venue to portray the members of her family of origin as heartless and mentally ill…a memoir published and promoted as fiction by her publisher.
